The colonists that landed on Pern loved it, it was Earth-like yet unspoiled by the industrial development and interstellar wars that had ravaged the other planets of humankind. They settled in, but then disaster struck in the form of Thread-it devoured anything and anybody that it came into contact with. The colonists noticed little lizards that killed the Thread and wished they had bigger ones to help fight. The geneticists went to work.
